Chameleons
by Abi, Denyce, Caden and Alisha

Chameleons are famous for their quick changing colour abilities. They change temperature of light and mood.  Males become bright to signal their dominance and turn dark when they feel endangered.  Females let males know if they are willing to mate by changing colour of their skin. They change to bright yellow when they are angry. Owners of chameleons can learn to read their pet’s mood based on the colour of their skin. They can change colour because their other layer is transparent. Transparent means it allows light to pass through so that the object underneath can be seen. They have several layers of specialized  cells called chromatophores and these cells change colour. Their tails curl when they are scared, their eyes change to the same colour of their body. When they are shedding, their skin goes white. They can go up to 24 inches, and baby chameleons eat flies. Their feet are flexible. There are 100 different types of chameleons.  Differentiated by size, habitat, and colour, their life span is about 8-10 years.  Most chameleons live in Japan and they live in the jungle or the dessert. They are part of the lizard family and they eat mostly insects and greens. They are kept as pets. They have a blade on their back to protect themselves from their predators. Their tongue is 10 feet long. Their brain is the size of a jellybean. Chameleons are found throughout the deserts, jungle savannas and forests mostly found on Madagascar. They can be found in the wild. They are Omnivores, and they are reptiles. Their colours that they can change into are pink, blue, red, orange, green, black, light blue, yellow, and turquoise. They mostly eat insects because they are their favourite food. They are often the target for hungry predators. Their predators are snakes, bird, and mammals. Their main prey are insects, snails, and leaf. To protect their eggs they dig a hole that is 10-30 cm deep and bury them. Female chameleons have a clutch of eggs and there are about 20 eggs. Though the eggs can vary from 1 to nearly 100, the eggs take 4-12 months to hatch. Hawks are chameleon’s main predators. Chameleons can change colour in up to 20 seconds

What is RNA
By Stewart, Katelynne

RNA stands for Ribonucleic Acid. RNA is in every cell its role is to act like a messenger to carry instructions from DNA. It controls the syntheses of proteins. Although in some viruses RNA rather than DNA carries genetic information. RNA makes DNA stable. RNA looks with DNA to make protein. The master blueprint is DNA. Then RNA is the plan carrier. They ether build it in the cytoplasm or the endoplasmic reticulum. The building materials are amino acids. The construction workers are:
·       Ribosomes
·       RNA molecules

RNA carries genes. RNA can match any gene. RNA can be used as a research tool for DNA. RNA works with DNA to become a gene.

What Makes Things Bounce
by Stewart, Jaycee, Olivia and Rheya
Soft ball:
Before you throw a ball it has potential energy.  When a ball hits the ground it forms kinetic energy.  Then the ball reforms its shape it returns back to potential energy

Soccer Ball:
A soccer ball bounces to a physic of dynamics.  The material of the soccer ball that composes it helps it to bounce. The weight of the soccer ball changes how the ball bounces due to the materials, the weight, and the substance. The weight and substance will allow it to bounce higher than a basketball but it also counts of how much air is inside the ball.

Basketball:
The basketball is just like a soccer ball it just has more rubber and is heavier which makes it have a disadvantage.  Since the basketball is heavier it will bounce lower than the soccer and the soft ball.

Plastic ball:
The plastic ball is the lightest of them all with means it bounces the highest due to the plastic and the lightness.

Dis-solvable Stitches
by Dora, Abi, Alisha

Stitches aren't meant for scratches, they’re meant for big wounds or cuts that won’t heal on their own.  The most often spots for stitches are face, chin, hands or feet. When the doctors are stitching, they take both sides of the skin, take the needle, pull it through both sides and tie a knot. You stitch a loop of thread that doctor use to join your skin together. Stitches are kind of like sewing.  A few days-1 weeks, your skin peels, and the doctor takes the stitches out. What they do is, cut the knot and gently pulls the thread out. Sometimes, the stitches won’t dissolve all the way, so the doctor can take the excess out. Doctors use different kinds of threads, called sutures. Some are made of nylon, silk, and vicryl. Vicryl thread actually dissolves in your skin. Vicryl is usually used on your lips, face or mouth.  Stitches stay in their place for about a week or 2. They remove it once the wound is closed. The threads are made of special materials that can remain in your body for a certain amount of time. Dis-solvable stitches decompose in your body.  The body breaks  down the stitches because they are made of natural materials.

Tom Longboat
By: Cameron C
Tom Longboat was born on June 4th 1887 and he died on January 9th 1949, aged 61. He was 5 foot 7 inches. He weighed 146 pounds. He married 2 people. He had four children and one of the people he married was named Lauretta Maracle. In 1940 he developed pneumonia. A disease where water builds up in your lungs and you have a very hard time breathing. His full name was Thomas Charles Longboat. His parents name where George and Betsy Longboat. Tom had a native name, and it was “Cogwagee” which means “everything.”

In 1905, Tom entered his first competitive race. He placed 2nd in that race. After that he entered the Boston Marathon, which he placed 1st, and won by three minutes. Tom set a massive record; the record time he set was 2:24:24. In 1908 Tom entered the London Olympic Games. Sadly, during the race, Tom collapsed to the ground and he did not finish the race.

Tom’s favourite sports were lacrosse and running. Tom’s longest race measured 30km long. Tom was able to win lots of his races because he saved his energy until the last part of the race. Tom was a really fast runner. Faster than most of the runners at that time.

Tom had a racing career in 1905. In February 1916, Tom stopped running because he wanted to run messages in World War 1. He was a dispatch carrier in with the 107th Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force. When he was running the messages, Tom was only wounded twice out of all the times he carried the messages.

Tom’s dad died when he was only 5 years old. They all pitched in with chores. Toms brother was sent out to get him one time and they raced back home. Tom won that, of course. Tom died because of his pneumonia, too much water got into his lungs and he couldn't breathe at all. Shortly after that, he died.

THE END.
Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms
By Dora

The Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms is important in my opinion because if we didn’t have the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms we could be a very strict country. I like having our rights and freedoms because it gives us a say in what we want, and we don’t need to do what someone tells us to do. The rights and freedoms give a lot of respect to us. Everyone in Canada is equal.
 The Freedoms of Canada
We have a conscience, which means we have a voice in what we say. We can choose our own religion, our own thoughts, and beliefs. We have our own opinion, expressions, and we can speak any language as long as we know French or English. We have our own peace, and association. Association can be a group of people organizing something they believe in for a purpose. These are nice freedoms to have, knowing we can speak our own language, have our own opinions on thoughts and beliefs.
The Rights of Canada

When we are 18, we are allowed to start voting. The governments talks about purpose of Canada at least once a year. You can start an election to be the mayor or apart of the government when we are 18 and you can be a part of government up to 5 years. You may be with the government for over 5 years if it during war. When you are a citizen of Canada, you have the right to enter Canada, leave Canada, and live in Canada. You are allowed to move to any part of Canada as well. Teacher or police officers have the right to arrest you or give you detention. You have the right to live a life, liberty, and have security unless you’re cause an injustice. You shouldn't have any cruel or harm punishment. Every single person in Canada is equal. The official languages are English and French. You may speak any language as long as you know how to speak English or French. All the rights and freedoms apply to everyone equally. Some rights and freedoms don’t apply to aboriginals as they are given their own rights and freedoms.

Canadian Symbols

The Coat of Arms of Canada
By Abi, Mia, Jaylah

The coat of arms is a unique heraldic design. It was used by medieval knights to cover, protect, and identify. The colours can trace their history to the first crusade of the 11th century. The various parts of the coat of arms have different meanings like crown standing for Canada being a constitutional monarchy or and crest standing for the sovereignty of Canada or supporters stand for Canada’s option to oppression. The lion and the unicorn on the crest represent the United Kingdom. The coat of arms is a symbol of a collection usually represented upon a shield that indicates the traits of a particular family. It is a practice called heraldry which includes researching and describing traits of the coat of arms and recording them for a reference.  The wording on the coat of arms means From Sea to Sea.
Parliament Buildings
By Olivia, Rheya

Canada’s parliament buildings are home to the federal government in Ottawa
In 1841 Quebec and Ontario joined and became Canada. The Parliament Buildings are located in Ottawa. Queen Victoria chose Ottawa to be a capital city. The center east and west blocks of parliament were built from 1859 to 1866. On February 3 1916 a small fire started in the Commons Reading room at 9pm. Irreplaceable books were lost. The fire grew and killed 7 people. It was not fully rebuilt in until 1922.
Peace Tower

The Peace Tower is located in the middle of the center block of Parliament. The Construction started on the 24th of July 1916 and was completed on the 1st of July 1927. It took 12 years to build. The Peace Tower flag is changed every day so it doesn’t get dirty except the holidays. The Peace Tower was built for the men and women who were killed in the First World War. The Peace Tower was built by a man named Henry Meroe.  The Peace Tower is 295 feet tall.

Official Lyrics of O Canada!
Lyrics O Canada (English version)
O Canada!
Our home and native land!
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The True North strong and free!
From far and wide,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.
Lyrics O Canada (French version)
« O Canada! Terre de nos aïeux,
Ton front est ceint de fleurons glorieux!
Car ton bras sait porter l'épée,
Il sait porter la croix!
Ton histoire est une épopée
Des plus brillants exploits.
Et ta valeur, de foi trempée,
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits.
Protégera nos foyers et nos droits. »
